On the left is the building that served as the Chapel when
Alcatraz was a military base from the 1850s until 1907.
Built in 1857, the Guardhouse is the oldest building on the Island.
Never tested in battle, it was used in 1862 to hold suspected
Confederate sympathizers and U.S. Army prisoners.
