The Warden's House commanded the island. Built in the 1920s,
it had 17 large rooms and windows framing sweeping views
of the Golden Gate Bridge and the lights of San Francisco.

In 1970, fire swept through the building, leaving this shell.
Red valerian and other plants now carpet the building's foundation
with color in the spring. Outside the walls, untended roses bloom
fade each season.
