- Saturday
- Took the 10:45 ferry to Alcatraz where we toured the grounds
and the former cellhouse. Afterwards we walked around Fisherman's Wharf and enjoyed
watching some of the street performers. My conclusion: there are A
LOT of weirdos in San Francisco :-) After taking a scenic driving tour of the city by the bay, we ate dinner at The House of Nanking, a little
hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Chinatown. Fabulous food.
- Sunday
- Mark and Phil (my brother) spent the morning playing golf while I worked on the Travel
Journal and did some reading. Later we went for ice cream at Vic's and to see a movie.

- Monday
- We woke up early to get to San Francisco in time for our noon flight. Leaving plenty of
time for traffic got us to the airport a couple hours early so we caught the last little
bit of the Clinton tapes while waiting. We arrived in Honolulu around 3:45 by the time we
got our rental car. Mark wanted to scope out the golf courses so we spent a couple of
hours driving around the island with a stop at the Fort Sutter PX for some snacks.
- Tuesday
- Mark got up at the crack of dawn to play golf at Malamala Bay Golf Course on Hickam Air
Force Base. I slept in a little later but since our internal clocks are still screwed up,
I got up at 8. For those that know me well, that normally does NOT classify as sleeping in
:-) I walked a block to Waikiki Beach where I got in a couple of hours of reading and
watching the scenery. After lunch we took visited the USS Arizona
Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Then a trek up Diamond Head Crater
to get a spectacular view of Ohau.

- Wednesday
- We had a leisurely morning before going to the airport for our short flight to Maui.We
did some "from the car" sightseeing on the 22 mile drive to our hotel in
Lahaina. We got settled in and I went down to the beach while Mark made some tee-time
calls. Later we walked along Front Street and ate dinner at Cheeseburger in Paradise.
- Thursday
- 18 holes of golf at the Makena Golf Course in South Maui. I rode
along in the cart for the first nine holes and then took the car and went to a nearby beach for a couple of hours while Mark finished playing. The
golf course was beautiful with 3 holes right along the water. We hustled back in
order to make it to the Royal Lahiana Luau. A wonderful buffet of
kahula pork, teriakyi beef, chicken, fresh fruit, salad and more. After dinner was the
show including lots of different styles of hula dancing and the fire thrower. A moonlit
stroll along the beach finished out the night.
- Friday
- We dragged out of bed at 5:30 a.m. for an early start on the Road to Hana. It's only
about a 60 mile trip. But the last 35 miles is a VERY curvy road around the
mountains...617 turns and 56 one-lane bridges...the whole trip takes about 3 hours. But
the scenery was beautiful, the Hawaii I wanted to see...rainforests and waterfalls. We beat most of other tourists whom we passed on the way
back to our hotel. I got a couple good "beach" hours in while Mark went to the
driving range. We're off to dinner at Moose McGullicuddy's.
